IPVanish is a popular US-based VPN service with a large server network and a host of useful features to help you surf the web anonymously and access geo-restricted content with ease.

The VPN service also claims to deliver some of the best speeds in the VPN industry and a no-logging policy.

In this IPVanish VPN review, we go beyond the usual marketing statements through extensive tests to determine just how reliable IPVanish really is.

Let’s look at some of the key features of this hugely popular VPN provider.

Company Background

IPVanish has changed hands a few times over the last few years.

The company was founded back in 2012 by Mudhook Marketing, a subsidiary of the Florida-based Highwinds Network Group. Another company known as StackPath acquired Highwinds Network in 2017 and automatically took over the operations of IPVanish.

In 2019, the VPN service was again sold to J2 Global company, which still runs the service up to date under their Net Protect brand. J2 Global owns other companies and websites including PC Mag, Encrypt.Me, StrongVPN, and the SugarSync cloud storage service.

IPVanish Servers and Server Locations

Geographic diversity is one of the most important things to consider when it comes to a VPN’s server fleet.

The more geographic locations the VPN has its servers located in the more options you have for hiding your IP address and finding a nearby server for faster speeds and reliable connections. The more servers a VPN provider has the more subscribers it serves and the better their services are.

IPVanish doesn’t disappoint when it comes to server locations. The company boasts of 1,300 servers spread across 55 countries in diverse geographic locations.

They even have servers located in Africa and South America, which are two locations often ignored by most VPN services. However, they don’t have servers in countries with oppressive Internet restrictions such as Russia and Turkey.

They nevertheless have servers in Hong Kong in Asia. Overall, IPVanish has a good distribution of servers across the globe.

Clear No-Logging Policy

IPVanish has a clear statement on their website stating they have a strict no-logging policy. They don’t record your connection, traffic, or browsing activities. Their privacy policy also says the same thing.

However, our biggest concern in terms of privacy is the VPNs location in the US, which is a member of the 14 Eyes Alliance. The company falls under a VPN-unfriendly jurisdiction and may be compelled to provide your personal and browsing data by a court of law.

Fortunately, IPVanish doesn’t keep customer logs and wouldn’t have much to provide to the agencies if compelled to.

Reliable VPN Speed

IPVanish boldly claims on their website that they offer the “best VPN speeds” thanks to their large network of globally dispersed servers.

For this IPVanish review, my team and I tested several servers in the VPN’s network and concluded that the VPN provider does indeed offer decent speeds although in some locations they lagged behind some of their key competitors such as ExpressVPN.

In our tests, New York had an average speed of 67 Mbps, Dallas, TX, had 44Mbps, and Toronto Canada showed average speeds of 79Mbps. These are fairly good speeds compared to the amount of speed loss you normally experience with other VPNs.

IPVanish Security Protocols and Encryption

In terms of privacy and security, IPVanish has a significant edge over its competitors. They use a combination of OpenVPN protocol and AES 256-bit encryption to ensure that your traffic and data are 100% secured.

OpenVPN is the golden standard and AES 256-bit encryption is reputed to be completely unbreakable by any form of brute force hacking. These are the same standards used by banks and the military.

To enhance your security, IPVanish also offers IPv6 leak protection that ensures your real IPv6 address doesn’t leak. They also have DNS leak protection activated by default and a kill switch that automatically closes your connection and block all traffic in case the VPN connection drops suddenly without warning.

The kill switch helps to protect your real IP address from exposure when the VPN connection suddenly drops. Unfortunately, the kill switch feature is only available on Windows and macOS platforms.

IPVanish also gives more control over the OpenVPN setup in your apps. You have the option to choose either the 1194 port or 443 port and the Scramble OpenVPN Traffic option to reduce the chances of getting blocked in anti-VPN countries such as Iran or China.

You can use the VPN without any security concerns or worries thanks to its dependable encryption and OpenVPN protocol.

Device Compatibility

IPVanish is compatible with all the major platforms including Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, Linux, Chromebook, Windows Phone, and even with Fire TV and routers.

They even show you how to install the VPN on your router if you want to have network-wide protection.

You won’t find many VPNs out there with native apps for Amazon Fire TV and Firestick.

The IPVanish Fire TV app allows you to unblock restricted streaming content from any country or region. IPVanish gives you a detailed Fire TV set-up guide for easy installation on your device.

A number of Simultaneous Device Connections? Unlimited!

This is another great thing about IPVanish. Unlike most VPNs which limit you to 3 or 5 simultaneous connections in different devices in one account, IPVanish allows you to connect to unlimited devices at the same time.

The only other VPN provider I know of with unlimited device connections is Surfshark.

Netflix and Torrenting

When it comes to working with Netflix, IPVanish showed us mixed results.

We could probably say that it does sometimes unblock Netflix but not consistently. Most of the servers we tried were blocked by Netflix with a few lucky chances of getting through.

If you’re a big fan of downloading heavy files then you’ll be glad to hear that IPVanish gives you unlimited P2P connections that allow you to torrent safely and anonymously. We, however, noticed a slight drop in speed while torrenting which is normally expected when downloading large heavy files.

Another great thing about IPVanish is that they offer you up to 250GB of secure storage through their partnership with SugarSync. This is enough space to save all your music, movie, and work files that you download via torrents.

IPVanish VPN Review on Pricing

IPVanish has a simple and straightforward pricing structure that gives customers the same features across all plans.

You can choose to pay $10 per month, $26.99 every 3 months, or go for the cheaper annual plan of $77.99 billed every year.

They also offer a risk-free 30-day money-back guarantee that you can use to test the VPN before you make a purchase decision.

Excellent Customer Support

IPVanish gives you 3 ways of reaching their customer desk namely:

  • Live Chat (which happens to be the fastest)
  • Email
  • Telephone support

Check what times their Live Chat is available on their website but phone support is usually available 24/7. Both Live Chat and telephone support channels worked fine according to our tests.
